When shopping for an ATV, the sheer number of model and feature options can be understandably overwhelming. Choose a Type of ATV

There are two main types of quads.

First, there are sport four-wheelers built for trail riding.

They often prioritize:

  • Rider comfort, even on all-day adventures.
  • High speed capacity.
  • Compact frames that can access width-restricted trailers.

Then there are utility ATVs. These are made for property management tasks, such as farming or landscaping projects.

They often prioritize:

  • Higher hauling capacity for carrying heavy tools and materials.
  • Higher ground clearance for cruising over obstacles.
  • Room to bring along another worker.

Sport ATVs can tackle some basic projects and utility quads can be used on trail riding. But it's best to get the type of four-wheeler that's made for the riding that you'll do most often.

Consider the Size

Smaller ATVs are usually lower in cost. Their lightweight nature also leads to better agility.

Larger quads usually offer better performance potential. They have more space for bringing along cargo - and sometimes another rider.

Factor In Your Riding Level

If you are brand-new to ATV riding, focus on beginner models. Shop quads with engines in the 250ccs to 300ccs range. It's important to get a four-wheeler that you can easily control. There are also features that make learning to ride easier, such as throttle limiters, keyed ignitions, and automatic CVT transmissions.

More experienced riders can shop for ATVs with higher performance potential. They will be better equipped to handle bigger quads with more power. But that doesn't necessarily mean you're ready for the biggest beast of an ATV either. Be realistic about what you can safely handle.

Think About the Terrain

A standard ATV will be equipped to travel across compact dirt trails.

There are certain terrains that are more difficult for quads, such as sandy or rocky areas. If you want to conquer these areas, get an ATV built with those challenges in mind.

It is possible to modify a standard ATV to be better suited for harsher terrains. But it costs money to buy the right aftermarket accessories and takes time to install them. It's usually better to simply buy an ATV that's designed for your preferred terrain.
